Noise: servers, cooling equipment, and property-line reality

Inside a data hall, servers are loud. The public question is what reaches the property line from the facility itself — excluding generators, on-site power generation, construction, and traffic.

What this page includes

This noise category is the data centre facility itself: servers, server fans, internal airflow, liquid-cooling pumps, dry coolers, outdoor cooling fans, motors, heat exchangers, compressors or chillers if used, and normal building mechanical systems.

It does not include backup generators, on-site gas generation, the Greenlight power plant, construction equipment, or traffic. Those are separate noise categories and should be studied separately.

Inside the data hall

Server fans, power supplies, internal airflow, and pumps generate high indoor noise.

Building envelope

Walls, doors, insulation, layout, and distance reduce the noise that escapes.

Outdoor cooling equipment

Dry coolers, fans, motors, airflow, and vibration are the realistic outdoor sources.

Property line

The only question that matters for neighbours is the sound level that actually reaches them.

A useful local comparison: WEM

West Edmonton Mall is not identical to a data centre, but it is a useful comparison for large-building mechanical noise. WEM has HVAC, refrigeration, pumps, fans, restaurants, a waterpark, a wave pool, an ice rink, crowds, service areas, and major mechanical systems.

A lot of that is noisy inside the building. But loud inside does not automatically mean dangerous at the property line.

The same logic applies here: measure the actual mechanical noise, not imaginary “AI noise.”

  • What is the projected property-line sound level?
  • What is the nighttime sound level?
  • Are there tonal, low-frequency, or vibration issues?
  • What mitigation is built into the design?
  • Who independently verifies levels after startup?
  • What happens if limits are exceeded?

What the evidence should look like

If someone claims harmful property-line noise, the answer is simple: bring a baseline reading, a model, frequency analysis, operating scenarios, and post-startup verification.

Noise is measurable. It has a level, source, frequency, direction, duration, and distance.

The real issue is ordinary mechanical noise from actual equipment — not mystery AI noise.
